Have you considered plastic lumber? There are several product lines, particularly US Plastic Lumber Co. (USPL - NYSE. It's made entirely from recycled plastic bottles which are textured and colored to look just like lumber. Except it's weather and insect proof. Unlike treated lumber which has to be cleaned and restained periodically, plastic lumber just needs to have the surface dirt washed off with ordinary soap. The in-ground supports never rot. The boards don't buckle or twist. An easy hosing down and it looks new. It resists abrasion and withstands harsh weather. It's a terrific product. If you have ever gone to Yellowstone National Park to see the Old Faithful geyser, you will see an enormous board-walk lined with benches, all made with plastic lumber, It's impervious to the spray, to the trampling feet of hundreds of thousands of visitors, to the very harsh winters and the burning summer sun. The sign says that the entire facility was made from 400,000 recycled soda bottles. In a National Park full of trees, not a single tree was cut down to make it.
You might give some serious thought, as I have, to this product. No cut trees. No harsh irritating preserving chemicals. Environmentally friendly and it will last forever, which, of course, means its a great advantage when you sell your house. Don't let some lumber salesman talk it down. Ask around at places like Home Depot. Good luck.
