Hello All:
I like the idea of this board and think it will be useful and entertaining to a lot of people.
I took early retirement last April 28th. I RE'ed at the age of 51. I had planned for about 5 years to get out of the rat race and live my life the way I wanted to. It was made possible by our company starting a 401K plan in 1987 and forcing myself to contribute the
maxium amount to it since its conception. My first boss gave me good advice when he said, “anything this company recommends that you invest in, do”.
I guess that I am fortunate that I worked for a company that I loved and one that treated the worker's well. Granted, there were some employees that were unhappy, but you will find that at any company. I think a persons attitude has a lot to do with it.
The nice thing is now I don't do anything unless I want to do it, no time clock, staying home when it snows, and traveling when I want to go somewhere.
My wife and I are now really living our dreams. We spent 2 months last summer fishing at our favorite lake, 6 weeks at the coast, and a trip to Utah to visit Arches National Monument and Canyonlands. We stayed home this winter just to see if I would like snow. (Driving for a living during the winter can really stress a person out). I found that if a
person doesn't have to work in it, snow is beautiful.
We love to travel, have a 5th wheel, and plan on going to Nevada, Arizona, and Utah this year. The Florida Keys and the Caribbean is about 5 years away yet.
I guess the best thing to say is that any goal is achievable if one plans for it and has a
little luck along the way. Retirement is so much better than what people think it is.
Good luck to Everyone! Retired51
