Not been there so whatever I say take it with a grain of salt. I have been told by a few native folks that Extremadura is nice area and (underline this) "different". I have been given to understand that by different they mean something like "more tropical", strange as it sounds. Apparently not many people do such stuff, I guess it would be alright with you. If you opt for such route, perhaps the loop can be even wider for two weeks time and arrive as far as Salamanca.

If you plan on driving there, are you familiar with the Michelin guides? Purchasing one for Portugal-Spain before planning the trip might help you with your planning (rather good maps and not bad information about where to stay, eat etc). Since you enjoy Spain and probably shall return there, might be money well spent.
