Hello, I am currently employed at a TIAA-CREF institution. I understand each school or facility can set their own guidelines about types of withdrawels. Here we can have access to all CREF at age 55 if we leave the istitution and can do early retirement at 57. I would assume any withdrawels prior to 59 1/2 would either be taxed an extra 10%, rolled into an IRA, or given out via the special rules for distribution over a 5 year period that has to be done carefully by a skilled tax person. You should contact her institution directly and find out what their specific rules are. CREF probably has a totally differ set of rules than TIAA...good luck...Ted
