You wrote; Mom is 58 and she doens't plan on retiring until 68. So here is the scenario for her retirement: According to her latest SS statement she will get about $500 a month from that agency. She will get about $150 a month from her pension. That's not a heck of a lot.

…. . For the last 2 years, however, she has been teaching in public school. Now she makes about 35K.


You should be aware of the Government Pension Offset and Windfall Elimination. If
your mother works for a public school, she almost certainly is not contributing to social security, but rather to a public school retirement plan.

I would counsel her to contact social security and discuss survivor benefits and her own benefits, after reading the links below.

If you work for an employer who doesn't withhold Social Security taxes, such as a government agency or an employer in another country, the pension you get based on that work may reduce your Social Security benefits.
