Here is a bit of hard reality. Neither of this years WS participants would have even qualified for the postseason prior to 1995. It would have been either Tampa or the Twins in the Series...

Not true. San Francisco finished the 2010 regular season with the 2nd best record in the NL, and they would've still gotten in under the 1994 playoff format, unless they were in the same division as Philadelphia.

I agree, though, with your point that too many teams make the playoffs and the result is that quality suffers and the regular season becomes fairly meaningless. But pro sports will always drift towards more playoff games because they make more money. Heck, NBA & NHL allow 53% of their teams to make the playoffs, even some teams with losing records!
