A good-natured woman trying to save a cat she had hit with her car got the fright of her life when the unconscious animal woke up in her back seat, and revealed that it wasn't what it seemed.

Thinking it was merely a house cat after hitting it in Bangor, Maine, yesterday, the unidentified woman picked it up and loaded it into her van with the intention of bringing it to the vet.

But as she drove, the animal woke up and revealed its true colors - it was actually a bobcat.

The department said in a statement: 'Although this seems amusing, one should always be careful handling injured animals and call local animal control officer or Game Wardens when in doubt.'
