Hey Diane--Double yay! Cool. The lead New Yorker Talk of the Town piece this week discusses the Times' decision. http://www.newyorker.com/talk/content/?020902ta_talk_mead It's a little odd, IMHO. Somehow Rebecca Mead sees the decision as part of a trend toward the romantic individualization of marriage: The Times' same-sex wedding announcements will be the supreme expression of the contemporary ideal of marriage as a grand, individualistic romance detached from society's strictures—the ideal to which contemporary Americans are wedded, for better or for worse. I had the tired old 46 year old's reaction, which is that we (or those of us want it) simply want to have the right to screw up marriage as well as they do. Clearly, I needed a good night's sleep! ;-)Of course, I scoured the first Vows page of the Times after the announcement. Nothin' yet. ;-)Fool on,Tom9 (Partner wants rings quietly at Tiffanys; I want big bash on boat on Potomac. We have years of negotiating on this ahead, I fear.)
