Hey guys, anyone here?

I started playing chess again after I stopped playing online poker. I play at a local chess club now. I didn't see many new posts on this board though.

hey -

I hadn't played in years, but very recently my son and i started playing online at Chess.com. He lives out of state and it's really been kinda fun.

When my own dad was young he and his dad played by snail mail .. sending a letter back and forth across the country ... one move at a time.

I haven't played an actual game in years. Started teaching my daughter a while back, but then stopped. Maybe I'll pick that back up again...

I don't think I've played since we used to play games by posting the moves on this board. Used to get my ass kicked most of the time.

Ditto on both counts.

Man .. sounds like everyone checking in is saying that 'once upon a time' they played .. but not for years!

Chess sounds like another casualty of the diminution of close, easy, simple personal interaction that has no promise other than mere enjoyment.

bummer

That's what happened with me. I wound up getting into poker. hmmm... Play chess for fun, or win money playing poker?

Not such a tough choice...

I like chess, I think it's a great game! It is like, how people might think you are sort of extreme if you are a bodybuilder, but if you play chess which is like bodybuilding for the mind, then they will think you are nerdy.

I won my first game last week. I will play again today! I entered a sort of tournament where the time control is 90 minutes per side.

I've started playing chess again. I used to play a lot, but then my ex started getting mad about me beating him all the time. I tried Craig's List to find some chess players, but they were sort of creepy. The adult chess team in my area meets on a day that is a conflict for me.

So for right now, I just play against my students (I am an HS teacher and I coach chess). They LOVE it when they win against me, but I really only play them when I am working on other things...so I am distracted and thinking about grades or assignments or lectures.

I would love to play someone one-on-one - anyone in the Milwaukee area??

Yesterday I played another live game! I wrote down the game. I made a few mistakes but I won! Is it the thing to do to post games here, or discouraged?

Cool! I made it into a convenient link, like this:

http://www.chessvideos.tv/chess-game-replayer.php?id=13971

Also, if it's inconvenient to go outside of fool.com, here is the game score! I am playing as the black pieces.

1. e4 d5 2. exd5 Qxd5 3. Nc3 Qa5 4. d4 c6 5. Be2 Nf6 6. Nf3 Bg4 7. Ne5 Bxe2 8. Qxe2 e6 9. O-O Bd6 10. f4 O-O 11. Be3 Nbd7 12. Bf2 c5 13. Rad1 Nb6 14. Qf3 Nbd5 15. Nc4 Qa6 16. Nxd6 Qxd6 17. g3 c4 18. Rfe1 Qb4 19. Rb1 Nxc3 20. bxc3 Qa3 21. Qxb7 Qxc3 22. Qb2 Nd5 23. Re5 Qxb2 24. Rxb2 Rfb8 25. Rxb8 Rxb8 26. f5 Rb2 27. fxe6 fxe6 28. Rxe6 Rxc2 29. Re5 Nb4 30. Be3 Nd3 31. Ra5 Re2 32. Bf4 c3 33. Ra3 Nxf4 34. Rxc3 Nd5 35. Ra3 Ne3 36. Rxa7 Rg2+ 37. Kh1 Rd2 38. Kg1 Rxd4 39. a4 Rd2 40. a5 Rg2+ 41. Kh1 Ra2 42. Kg1 Nc4 43. a6 Nb6 44. h4 h5 45. Kh1 Kh7 46. Kg1 Kg6 47. Kh1 Kf6 48. Kg1 g6 49. Kh1 Nd5 50. Rd7 Ke6 51. Rg7 Ne7 52. Kg1 Rxa6 53. Kg2 Kf6 54. Rh7 Re6 55. Kf3 Nf5 56. Kf4 Rd6 57. Rc7 Rd4+ 58. Kf3 Rd3+ 59. Kf2 Rxg3 60. Rc6 Ke5 61. Rc5 Ke4 62. Rc4 Kd5 63. Rf4 Rg4

Here's a summary of the game:

I play the Caro-Kann version of the Scandinavian Defense.
Early on I get a cramped position but one that I like.
I unwisely trade off my light-squared bishop.
He shuts in his dark-squared bishop for no reason.
I do a premature central break, position becomes unclear
I bust up his queenside
I exchange queens and simplify into an advantageous endgame
I get a passed c-pawn and penetrate with rook
I win a piece for a pawn, missing a chance to win a whole rook
I might have played the endgame badly

I haven't stopped playing since the board slowed down quite a while ago but now play on Gameknot.com. If you're interested in playing, sign up for free and challenge me. My screen name is the same.

Cheers,
Bill
