Hey you all-- One of you said you freeze gallon blocks of sterilized water to chill your wort. How much ice do you add to achieve how much cooling? (How quickly do you get a boiling wort chilled to 70?) This sounds like a great way to do it and I want to try.

I usually freeze two quart sized blocks of ice. I use sanitizer on my plastic containers, boil water and then add the water to the plastic containers. Two quart sized blocks will lower three gallons of wort near boiling temperature to about 100-110F. To get it lower, I would probably need another quart-sized block.

My main concern is not to lower the temperature all the down to pitching temperature right away. It is to lower the wort temperature down quickly so the last additions of hops act more like aroma hops than boiling hops.
