Hi Actuary,

I'm in virtually the same boat! Got married in 1999, immediately changed our withholding, and less tax was taken out of both our paychecks! I figure that means taxes are lower for married couples...

Now TurboTax last night tells me we owe $4000! ACK!

Well, we don't owe a penalty. Apparently, if you change status from Single to Married, and some other qualifications are met, there's no penalty. Have your friend check out all the implications.

But what of the huge difference???? And will filing Married Separately make any difference? That's what I'm here on this board to find out...
