The one thing I'll disagree with is that TR 2045 is the way to go otherwise

We agree on this point. I probably said it wrong. I was trying to say that in my opinion, he was better off in TR 2045 than 4-5 individual stocks. I agree with you that he could do better by ditching the balanced fund.

I'll just add this for the Commando. If I were just starting an IRA with a long time horizon I would put it in a total market index fund. Just keep adding until you get few years' worth of income invested. Then if you want to add other asset classes or overweight a particular equity segment (say small-cap value) then go for it.

I try to keep investing as simple as possible.
