Hi, I just read about the suggestion that this board be created at Improve the Fool. I'm interested in joining a discussion, if one begins.

I'll start by saying that I've recently been through this and sure wish I'd made some choices, plans, and preparations ahead of time. We lost our sixteen year old son, who'd been medically fragile for some time and had become quite ill in the months preceding his death. We touched on this topic on occasion, but couldn't bring ourselves to make any decisions. We'd at least agreed ahead of time that we wanted him here, in the town in which we live, and not our hometown.

My husband and I have lived in this town for more than twenty years, but didn't realize we hadn't been to a funeral here til it was time to choose a funeral home. (It's not that we haven't been to funerals, but our families live about an hour away and most funerals have been there, or other towns in the surrounding area.)

It's difficult to choose a funeral home when you have to decide NOW who is going to come to your home to take your loved one. It's too late to shop around or even call friends for recommendations when the time is at hand, and something has to be done.

Anyway, I'll be interested in joining the discussions that take place here.
