Hi Im interested in investing £50000 in government bonds and I'm 52 years old , but I have limited knowlegde of the finance industry could anyone tell me what is the highest return on government bonds at the moment and which one I should go for.

If you're interested in British government bonds (I believe they're called "gilts" on the other side of the Atlantic), you should go over to the UK Fool site, www.fool.co.uk . You can probably get a better answer from the appropriate message board there.

Your return depends on the maturity of the bonds. If you're willing to tie up your money for longer periods of time, you'll get a higher rate. As for American goverment bonds, you can expect perhaps 3% for 2-year bonds, 3.5% for 5-year and maybe 4.5% for 10-year. Up-to-date yields can be found at www.treas.gov . UK gilts will certainly have different rates attached to them.
