Hi James,

I have the Putnam S&P 500 Index fund in my employer's 401(k) plan. I have been invested in it since it became available to me in January of 1998 and have no major complaints. I check the performance every quarter (it is also available on the web site) and it has done well, even beating the index one year by a tiny amount (spooky!). The expense ratio is quite reasonable, about 0.23% if I recall correctly (not quite as good as Vanguard's, but if that was an option we wouldn't be talking about this.)

Considering your 401(k) provider is Putnam and most of their other funds are stinky this may be your best option - I use it!
