Don't you have an inspection contingency in your offer? You oughta be able to walk and get your marbles back too! Failing that, do you have a financing contingency? Your loan officer can always give you a denial of credit form leter... doesn't even HAVE to fully explain or justify why (as long as he warrants it has nothing to do with discrimination.)

and have less than a month to either find a new house or new apartment to rent. We still love the place, but dealing with the sellers is getting to be a real headache - divorce in the works, hubby wants to sell quick but the wife doesn't want to move.

Sounds like you're in the power position, IF you can keep your staying power. Sounds like they think they have you hooked.

Perhaps Ray or Liz could give you a few negotiating tips to "show them the light."
