Hi Rich, I picked this book out of the list on Bookshare, a service for the blind, for proofreading for exactly that reason. I thought it would be a discussion of what a PhD is all about, how to pick a graduate school, a thesis advisor, a thesis topic, etc, etc.

It was none of those things. Instead it was a collection of college traditions.

Clever title. Probably intended to goose commercial sales.

Bookshare, by the way is a great program looking for volunteers to scan in books and proofread them, so the blind (or vision impaired) can download them and have the computer read the text to them or present it in Braille.

A typical proofreading takes about 4 hrs.

If you are interested in volunteering, they are here: http://www.bookshare.org/

The naval history book was also a Bookshare.
