Our inspector unearthed a structural problem with the house we were interested in purchasing just recently. He donned a bunny suit and crawled around the very tight crawlspace for about 20 mins! Other inspectors don't even go into crawlspaces-- they'd recommend a "structural contractor" or leave it up to the termite inspector who is usually well versed in finding termites but not necessarily in determining the structural integrity of the house.bottom line: Get references, use word of mouth, check history. Find out exactly where the inspectors will go within the house. Hire the best. It is worth the few hundred dollars.
