When I did my taxes in TurboTax last year, it (the software) asked me some questions that lead me to believe that some home repair is deductable. Does anybody out there have some rough guidelines on this?

I'd like to know, just in general. But, I do have a more specific scenario in this case. My dad and I are currently doing some work on my roof. Very low key, father-daughter bonding kind of thing on the weekends. But, I also recently gave him about $1200 for truck repairs. I'm wondering if I can actually consider that payment for his work, and then deduct it?
