How risky is commodities investing?

If you are referring to futures trading, you can easily lose 100% of your capital, and then some. If you are referring to buying options, you lose only the premiums you pay. Don't even consider writing options.

DO I have to have a lot of money to do such, over $1,000, and what are the basic fundamentals.

The majority of brokerages I've explored won't open an account funded with less than $5,000.

In futures trading, you put up a certain amount of money as a "good faith" deposit to take a position, either long or short the futures contract. If the price moves in your direction, you make money. If the price moves against you, you lose.
