how would you invest 1 million - remember you cannot touch the principal and need the interest to live on?

So you don't care about inflation?

Right now I'd put 1/2 into a TIPS five year ladder.
1/4 into a 5 year treasury ladder or CDs (depending on which pay more).
1/4 into in AAA rated corporate bond ladder.

I would never take equities out of my mix unless I didn't need the additonal income to live on long-term or I didn't care about leaving anything to my kids.
