Howdy mills,

You said I don't quite understand if the Fool recommends index funds or individual stocks or both.

The Fool recommends that you take control of your own investements. That means you understand your personal level of risk and personal level of commitment to researching a company. In this way The Fool can recommend both Index Funds for someone who is most comfortable investing in mutual funds, and stocks for someone who is more comfortable selecting individual companies. The exact mix of your portfolio is up to you.

The whole idea is to invest your money so that you can sleep well at night and not get ulcers over what the market may be doing at any given second. The Ulcer-Inception-Value (just when you start to get an Ulcer over investments) is higher for some than for others. For example, my brother has the highest UIV number, a 10. He puts his money under his mattress. :)

Does that help clarify things for you?
