Janetpuppy is continually harping on how badly IBMers have been screwed by management in recent years. But there's one important benefit that she neglects to discuss: Most IBMers still have jobs....

Every day we read about how Nortel laid off another 20,000 people or Motorola has laid off 32,000 so far this year. The airlines have recenly shed over 100,000 people. How many people has IBM laid off this year, 2,200 or so if memory serves (less than 1%) out of 300,000+?

Look at this link created by the Washington Post of companies just in the Washington area that have had recent layoffs. Many of them have laid off 12%, 25%, 30% and even 50% of their employees.

IBM has laid off a few employees in specific areas, and cut the pay of contractors by 5-6% (something I'm not thrilled about), but at least we still have jobs, and pretty good ones at that. (At least I'm not flipping burgers or emptying garbage cans....)

Why not keep that fact in mind the next time you feel tempted to dump on IBM?

Mark.
