Hyacinthe said,

Flowering dogwood (Cornus florida) is another beautiful smaller tree that is relatively clean; it fruits but the birds will eat the berries before they fall. Not the greatest for shade though.

No wonder I'm seeing evidence of my new dogwood tree having produced seeds (I can see the seed stems), but no seeds are around!

Du-uh, I should have known the birds ate them, since I've read that they love dogwood seeds. Heh

My tree is front and center in my sunny (!) front lawn, has a nice wide bed with a rounded brick border, and is growing very well in our Maryland clay after we planted it in May. We make sure it is kept watered, but not too much.
