I almost envy those whose needs and wants are truly simple. If our passion was golf and fishing, we could retire on much less and indulge our passions. But between my wife and me, our passions are having a nice house in a nice area with good weather (for us that means California); SCUBA diving at great sites; learning foreign languages by taking classes in countries where the languages are spoken. Growing up, my wife lived in somewhat downtrodden circumstances, so it's important for her to have nice (high quality) stuff now. Not a lot of it, but definitely above average in cost.

To each his own.
