I am a US Trust client. I cannot begin to explain the level of service it provides me. I pay it a mid-five figure sum every year to manage my investments, pay my taxes, answer questions, etc. And as I tell the "team" handling my affairs, every time I see the bill, I first thing I say to myself, "My God, these guys are expensive." Then in the next breath, I say "God, these people are worth twice what I am paying them." It

Take taxes: It prepares my personal taxes, a partnership tax return, and two trust returns. And when I ran a charitable foundation, it did the foundation return. Different specialist in the tax department prepare each type of return and then there is one person in charge of the overall picture. Got a tax problem? Someone in the office can probably answer it?

You got a charitable foundation problem, there is department that handles it. You have a tricky insurance problem and need a recommendation, it will give you one. Want a referral to an experienced trust and estate lawyer anywhere in the country/world, you will get it. You are from Podunk USA, and need tickets to the hottest Broadway show at the last minute, give it a call. You will be referred to its ticket broker. Want to buy a house anywhere in the country, it will arrange the mortgage.

You do not hire US Trust to be a "broker." You hire it to MANAGE your investments, you give it the parameters, walk away, and let it do its thing. You review your monthly statements.

Being self-directed is the last thing I want. I read somewhere that one-third of its customer basis is worth $2-$10 million, and one third is $10-$50 million and the rest is above $50 million. Do you have any idea as to the amount of paperwork and time it takes to manage a $2 million portfolio much less than a $25 million of $100 million portfolio.
