I am an American who was living in Paris during the time of the September 11th attacks. I saw the French literally crying in the streets showing compassion for Americans. American flags were displayed in storefronts. French troops were sent to Afghanistan… The Bush Administration has shamelessly squandered the chance for diplomacy. Why didn't Bush himself go to speak to the Security Council? The “you are either with us or with the terrorists” sound bites did not work in America's favor.

The idea that banning French products will some how make the French suffer for their views concerning Iraq and not hurt Americans is ignorant. What about the American franchise owners (Motel 6 etc) or the importers of these products? We live in a global world and Americans need to realize this fact. Will you boycott German products? But many German cars are built in the US? Not buy Russian Vodka? Drunk at the american restaurant? What car are you currently driving daily and where was it constructed? The French boycott is typical FOX network hype. It will get ratings and breed more hatred in the world. How is this productive? So the rest of the world will stop buying Coke? What about all the Coke employees stationed around the globe? They should all return to Atlanta?

So are you walking past these products in the stores or passing them in your gas guzzling air-conditioned SUV? Why are Americans not rallying together to conserve oil? The true product boycott, which could change not only the state of the environment but lead to peace in the world. I am not saying that the impending war in Iraq is only about oil, which is a far too simplistic argument, but it is a factor. To Cheney and Bush not only is Iraq an axis of evil but also a valued customer?

When I look at the current state of my investments, I have more to worry about than calling French Fries, Freedom Fries. When public school lunch funding is cut while Haliburton is being granted a 9,000,000 dollar contract to re-build a country that we have not even bombed yet it is hard not be cynical concerning the state of the world in which we are living.

Americans can't buy the best French cheese in this country due to insane laws banning non-pasteurized cheese. In PA, I can't buy many French wines due to State controlled liquor stores and their laws and control. I'll guess I'll need to return to Paris where I will delight in a picnic of a ripe Vacharin and a glass of champagne – enjoyed with my French friends.
