I am in a peculiar situation that does not seem to come up to at all in this board. I am currently 27 with no investment in anything at this time and am making an "average" income. The situation however will change dramatically in two years where I will make significantly more(this is why I havent started saving for retirement...if you disagree please tell me why). I hope that what you expect in fact comes to pass, and it probably will. On the other hand, it's not entirely unheard of for businesses to alter the career paths of folks who have every reason to believe that they are on the verge of making the big dollars. One example might be a large law firm where an associate works his/her way up to partner. It's not unheard of for these positions to vanish or for the expected compensation to be drastically cut during economic downturns and other such events. There's also the potential for things in your personal life to rise up and destroy your financial situation. This is why I think it's smart to always save and invest as if the year you are in might be the last chance you have to save for retirement.
