I am so glad I use Windows only for my tax returns. Each time they improve Windows, from Windows 2 to 3 to 95 to XP to 7, some things got better, but others stopped working. The step up from XP to 7 was the worst. I could backup NTFS and FAT32 to tape with XP. Now with Windows 7 professional, I can do neither. Luckily that shared partition backs up when I run Linux. The early versions of Windows were horribly slow, and really were 16-bit. Windows 95 was fast enough to use, but it crashed way to often and their compilation suite was incompatible with Office. You could install either one and it would work, but if you also installed the other, the first one would no longer work: incompatible libraries. XP never crashed on me: a giant improvement. I never wrote any programs for it, though, nor did I get Office for it. Now Windows 7, where they took features away that I would normally assume would be there. I realize most people I know never make backups, and buy a new computer rather than defragmenting a hard drive, but still .... .
