I am so sorry that for the sake of your own sanity, that you had to cut yourself off from someone who means so much to you.

On the positive side, I've heard over and over again that most alcoholics don't start to clean up their act until they "hit bottom." Until you stop helping him, you are considered an enabler. In other words, by making this helpful act on your own behalf, you are also doing the very best thing possible for your son.

There are no guarantees in this life, but by making yourself (and your money) less available, he has to more realistically confront his situation.

So, bottom line: by acting loving to yourself, you are also being loving to your son. As they say on airplanes, you aren't supposed to help others with their air mask until you have first put your own on. In this case, you got a two-fer.
