I believe that a million dollars is enough today for many people to retire. I believe it can comfortably provide for $50k a year, and if invested somewhat more agressively and with some other cushion set aside can provide 70-80k annually, if not a little less comfortably. I do believe that if one is invested in stocks, the draw can be increased to keep up with or ahead of inflation, in either case.

In twenty years, at approximately 3.5% inflation all of the numbers double and 2 million will probably be needed to retire.
