I-bonds for example have interest and principal growth off of inflation and all taxes are deferred until you cash in the bond(Which doesn't sound so bad to me)

This may have already been covered, or covered elsewhere, but how do I buy bonds (from whom)? What are commissions like? Are there any tricky downsides as compared to CDs?
