I bought my current car with a personal check. They called my bank to confirm fund availability and I was good to go. On the other hand, when I bought my motorcycle I had to get a cashier's check. I guess statistically someone is likelier to wreck a newly purchased bike than a newly purchased car, and that would certainly hamper a repo effort should it be required.
