I can say for sure that wind turbines are about the ugliest thing I can possibly imagine.

They say beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so maybe, for you, this statement is true. But have you ever driven by any of the following?

Coal plant
Area clear-cut for logging
Scar in a mountain created for mining
Oil sands development

We have all of these in Alberta (where I live) and with the exception of the last, I've driven by them all (and because of all the bad-press the Athabasca Oil Sands are getting, we get pictures of the last in the news regularly). I've traveled in California and have seen the windfarm you're talking about and believe me, it isn't nearly as ugly as the items in my list - both from a purely physical point of view, as well as what they represent.
