I checked over the recced replies, and I only see one reference to loan forgiveness schemes. If memory serves, you can teach in inner city situations for several years and get your loans forgiven.

Ya sure, you'll have to go through some Mickey Mouse in getting your teaching certificate, like taking a Texas college entrance exam usually given to people with low SAT scores(!), but in the Dallas case, you can actually start your alternative certification program, as it is called, in June and start getting paid a full teacher's salary while you are taking classes. Starting in Dallas is like $34K with modest bonuses for ESL, Math, having an advanced degree, being fluent in Spanish and a few other things.

I checked on what kinds of people are signing up for the program. There were 10 to 15-odd PhDs, lots of MAs.
