I disagree with this somewhat. I learned to drive on a manual transmission and caused my first accident just last year (about 12 years after learning to drive).Consider that using a gearshift requires a second hand, which can help prevent "multi-tasking" while driving (like using a cell phone, eating, drinking, smoking, applying makeup, to name a few). I personally think it requires more attention, which makes driving safer.It also makes it much less likely that someone other than your child drives the car.rad
