I do not remember was it out there, that some lib was making fun of you have to burn the village down to save it?

Of course they were using it completely out of context and in an absurd way

The original was "destroy the village" and it was literally true. In fact it was a bunch of the (Vietnamese) villagers who came to the US military and asked them to destroy every building in the village except the church - in order to save the village.

(a) The Vietcong had swept in and taken over the village. The villagers they hadn't killed were holed up in the church, the only building in the village that was built like European/American buildings and actually offered any meaningful defense against little things like bullets being fired through the walls.

(b) The rest of the village was built with construction techniques and materials typical of that area of Vietnam - extremely light construction with abundantly available indigenous materials, and *frequently replaced*. So losing the existing buildings all at once was an inconvenience, sure, but not a huge expense or difficulty.
