I don't see buying Shell gas at least 9 times a year as a "catch"
since you have to buy gas, anyway. My experience has been very positive, and I haven't had any problems with the credit card company. At one point, my payment was late because of a holiday weekend, and I was charged the late fee. When I called to complain, I was treated with courtesy; the fee was waived.

The only thing I would caution you about has to do with the budget - keeping track of all MasterCard purchases for each billing cycle is really important. I keep a running tab of purchases through the month (this takes only a few minutes of my time), and keep all MC receipts together until that month's bill comes. I do this to ensure that I don't overspend for the month. It's amazing how I've been able to keep the charges to roughly the same amount each month - that's one of the great benefits of a budget: it teaches discipline.
