I empathize with your situation. Eight years ago I had to place my mother in a nursing home. At the time the
administrator explained to me that I would have to sell off all her assets (home, car, stocks, bonds etc.) to cover all costs. I was very unknowledgable
about medicare/medicaid and what her rights were and
actual costs should be. Of paramount importance is that all elders are treated with dignity/respect and the only way to ensure this is to seek the advise
and direction of an "ELDER CARE ATTORNEY". The upfront cost can be considerable approx $5000.00, however it can be well worth it. All assets can be protected-
home, cars, stocks, bonds everything with one instrument called a "Living Trust". Investigate this
and seek the advise of a good eldercare attorney.
