I finally bit the bullet and went for an XP laptop, even if I could rebuild the P266 in about 2 hours. There comes a time when technology has advanced far enough that one needs to update at least one PC.

Whether the firewall that comes with XP is adequate security looks to be a matter of degree and debate. One review site flatly panned it:

”Note: Windows XP already contains a mediocre firewall. This firewall is NO replacement for a dedicated software solution. “

Another was a bit kinder:

”Windows Firewall performed well throughout the tests, and managed to prevent even the computer's identification information from leaking out. Don't go looking for exciting interfaces or endless user options, however, as the Windows Firewall is not customizable to any degree. In spite of this it will attempt to look after you and provide a workable measure of protection for those who don't like the setting up and interaction involved in other firewalls, and would otherwise be going unprotected. However, this is a risky strategy and we'd thoroughly recommend installing one of the more sophisticated firewalls instead.”

One only has to read one story of grief from someone whose brokerage account was compromised (and the hassle it took to unravel the situation) before conceding the wisdom of having the highest degree of protection that is reasonably possible, which, for most online investors, is going to be at least a dedicated firewall program, very strong passwords, etc.
