I find that making myself:
place the bills in one wire basket in my desk as soon as they arrive
do bills every Sunday night (no matter how few)
gas up the car on Mondays (no matter how full)
do laundry Mondays (no matter how often other days..

gives me a simple routine that ensures some basics get done no matter what....and if I'm going to be away, or out Sunday night, bills get done earlier that week.

Hats off to you for the big job you are doing with/for your kids.
