I get the "a ship is safer at sea" but they didn't leave New England until Thursday - when there were reports earlier in the week of the growing storm. On Thursday Hurricane Sandy was still in the Bahamas and Cuba, and was only two days old. At that stage the possible tracks for the hurricane were all over the place until the pressure fronts stabilized (actually one stalled, causing the inward track towards the coast rather than pushing out to the ocean, as most do) and indicated a general track along the east coast. The hurricane only formed on Tuesday (and was only considered a tropical storm until Thursday), as you can see from the hurricane track for the month of October:http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/tafb_latest/tws_atl_latest.gif
