I had a couple thougts similar to Paul's. First, are these banks paying high dividends? Your relative might have bought for income. Second, now is a lousy time to be selling anything in the banking arena. I'd probably wait until the credit crisis dust settles, although that could be a year. And, as Paul said, if the small banks are well run, they could be takeover targets eventually.

I agree, though, that 40% in a single narrow market segment is not a good investment plan. Further investigation of the broker and what authority he had would be wise.
