I had a similar experience, but I was doing something else on the computer and just let the update wait and wait and it finally finished. It may be that the developers forgot the screen telling us that the download/update was running so it runs in the background. I say it was 3 - 5 minutes.

I waited over ten minutes this time before deciding to reboot. It took less than one minute to download the update after Googling "Quicken 2012 manual updates" and maybe 1-2 more to manually install it and start using the program.

I'm glad it worked (eventually) for you.
