I have a Migration Assistant question. If I don't wipe SIL's laptop and just use MA to move my daughters data over to it, what happens to his old data?? Is it still there or is everything overwritten/replaced?

My feeling is neither. Rather you would create a new/additional user and copy all the data to the new user. Also you would add any new applications.

If you want a definitive answer to your question, I can suggest two options.

#1 Applecare, if you have that coverage on either PC
#2 The Apple Support forums. They are amazing and in my experience one gets answers to even complex questions in less than a day.

In case you are not familiar with the forums, go here:

You will need to use your AppleID to post. By default you will receive an email showing any replies to your post. If you want to followup with a further question, you will have to login to post again. The system encourages you to say if the reply "helped" or "resolved" your question. Helping and Resolving gives people points.

If you are unsure where to post, poke around until you see questions similar to your in terms of subject matter.

Google is a good place to start your search.
