I have a tendency to buy anything I really like in blocks of 3000 shares

That sounds really weird. I would have guessed that you'd buy however many shares you'd need to total $X, where that amount is how much you need to allocate to the particular stock. Why own 10 times as much of a $160 stock as a $16 stock because of nothing other than share price?
