I have been a VITA/TCE volunteer for three years. It is a gratifying experience. The second year we did electronic filing using computers the IRS had confiscated from criminal activities. This year we had to revert to hand preparation. It is revealing that all the "social engineering" Congress put into tax law to help the poor and indigent is too complicated for them. Also note that we encounter several cases of scams perpretrated on the elderly (widows) by very reputable brokerage firms and so-called financial advisors. Everyone is appreciative of the assistance by the AARP/IRS program.
