I have had to 'fight' the urges to buy all the 'newest' or 'greatest' stuff. I found a sure fired way to resist. We purchased land on a lake a few years back. There is no house on the land yet. This is going to be our retirement home. So, when I see something I 'just have to have', I think to myself, "How much longer will it be until we get the lake house built? What are we going to have to scrimp on when we build?" I also carry around a small copy of 'our dream' home in my wallet. I have even been know to wrap my credit cards in the copy of the house. This has really worked for me.
