I have never had to add air to my expansion tank. I doubt you will either. If you do,I suspect it would be time to replace it.

The bladder sometimes develops a leak. If it is a small leak the tank can remain functional as long as you top off the air as needed. If it's a large leak, either the bladder or the entire tank needs to be replaced.
