I have to admit, Simon and Cattleman's complaints about the combat being too hard have surprised me. When on horseback I find it almost impossible to lose a fight unless for some reason I stop moving or am massively outnumbered by enemy cavalry. On foot it is admittedly substantially harder - fighting more than one or two people at once is almost impossible, which I guess is realistic. You've got to keep your shield up and pick your spots. In castle sieges and other areas where you're forced to fight on foot I tend to stay back and plink arrows at people too.

Did you guys try turning down the difficulty? You can lower the amount of damage you take substantially, and the same with your troops. Perhaps they raised the default difficulty on the Steam version?
